In 2019, Mellben Seafood of Ang Mo Kio outlet was listed in the Singapore Michelin Guide with a “Michelin Plate”.

One of the first dedicated crab restaurants in Singapore, Mellben Seafood is known for its Claypot Crab Bee Hoon Soup, Butter Crabs and Chilli Crabs.

Most Singaporeans growing up in the North-eastern part of Singapore would have heard of Mellben Seafood in Ang Mo Kio, and its famously long queue. In the early 2000s, this queue extended across the coffee shop and wound around so as not to spill into the neighbouring shop. Waiting time stretched for as long as three hours on special occasions.

“Our Claypot Crab Bee Hoon soup is so tasty because we don’t cook our crabs one at a time. We can cook as many as 20 crabs in a single pot to get the taste and aroma right. There is no short cut. It is not something you can easily recreate at home even if you had our recipe.”

Interestingly, while the chilli crab is unofficially recognised as Singapore’s national dish, foodies in-the-know veer towards a different rendition of the dish at Mellben Seafood: the Claypot Crab Bee Hoon Soup. We’re among the first in Singapore to offer this creamy crab broth with thick vermicelli.
